While there may be just nine streets here, there are about a million things to see (and do) in Amsterdam’s cosiest, quirkiest neighbourhood. Riddled with big names like Denham and Free People and younger, independent brands alike, the Nine Streets – or Negen Straatjes if you’re feeling local – is a shopper’s paradise.
The gingerbread house-style buildings that stand to attention along the Huidenstraat, Reestraat and Wijde Heisteeg may date back to the 1600s, but the boutiques and ‘gezellig’ cafés they play host to are distinctly 21st century. Influencers hungrily snapping content, wire-haired terriers in bike baskets and elbow-patched gentlemen hunting for treasure at any of the myriad antique stores are all sure to have their fancy tickled in the Nine Streets. Because this neighbourhood has everything. And, what’s more, it’s for the ‘echte Amsterdammers’, so even if you’re just visiting, you’ll feel like one of the locals.
